Inmy wish was granted with a Honda Without anyone to guide me, my curiosity was my learning tool. I have built motorcycle engines, repaired motorcycle parts and have learned from the best. I worked at Honda of Brandon and Honda of Tampa as both a service technician and service manager from This was during the time the Honda XL motorcycles were developed. After trying several types of competition, drag, scrambles, road racing and flat track, I knew flat track was my love!
So here we are 40 years later, the love of Honda XL motorcycles still lives!!!
I am known as Hondajohn I have recently purchased the inventory of Pat Orman's. The motorcycle parts and services that Pat Orman did and sold are offered here. I am a Honda XL person. That means I care about your Honda XL motorcycle and your success.

Hello, I am new to this forum and new to four strokes and am looking some much needed help. I recently acquired a Honda XLR that needs a new head and piston from a valve breaking. Here's a few pictures of the head and piston: Here's a few pictures of the cylinder: -What would cause the valve to break in the first place? But I can't find anything that says whether or not the piston and cylinder is the same? I went into the Honda dealer near me and they said they didn't keep part numbers for that old of a bike.
I'm sorry if I asked any stupid questions, but any help is greatly appreciated And here's a few pictures of the bike: I could use suggestions on good cheap street tires for this. SwitchbladeJun 9, Stretch67Jun 9, The XL and XR do indeed have different BikeBandit part numbers and prices for the respective cylinders and heads, although neither is available for sale.
Or perhaps CycleWizard, an inmate here on ADVrider, could re-weld, machine, and rebuild the head and valves. Drop him a PM Your Mileage May Vary. ADV Sponsors. I bet the XR parts will work on the XL. I bet they will work. Stretch67Jun 10, SwitchbladeJun 11, I'd pull the valves and look it over. It might just be a carbon build up on the stems regardless it would be the perfect time to put new valve stem seals in it. Well I made a makeshift valve spring compressor and pulled the valves, and they're definitely bent.
Actually one was so bent that it took probably 5 minutes to wiggle and pull it out. I'm going to order some valves and seals tonight hopefully if I can find some at a decent price. I'm also going to go ahead and get the cylinder honed at my local machine shop, thank you everyone for the responses. Stretch67Jun 11, Heck yeah, get that old classic back on the road. Those marks on the piston most certainly came from contact with the valves. I'm thinking that perhaps a super-high rev and a very loose cam chain caused the cam gear to jump a tooth or two, allowing the piston to come up at an inopportune time in relation to the valves.
I realize the new head is from a different engine, but by all means, please replace your cam chain and tensioner to avoid reruns.
You're already elbow-deep in there, so why not? Yep that defiantly looks like a over rev with a warn cam chain. I'ed also inspect teh valve guides really good for cracks. I dought they are but now is the time to fix them if they are. These bikes are worth how ever much you are willing to put in them. This Retrospective article was printed in the June issue of Rider Magazine.Hind bint utbah death
This four-stroke woodser was an immediate hit with the casual rider, and could even seduce two-stroke lovers away from their mounts. As an added bonus the XL K1 was quite adequate on the pavement. For less than one-thousand dollars anyone could buy this mid-sized thumper and go play on the thousands of miles of dirt roads that traverse this continent.

You just had to keep in mind that the 2. Tripping down the tree-shrouded byways, where gravel could turn to sand, dirt to mud, the piston in the slightly oversquare cylinder 79mm bore, 71mm stroke provided a satisfyingly grunty response when the throttle was twisted.
The Brits had long claimed dominance in the four-stroke enduro scene, with half-a-dozen companies fielding s and s in the s. These were good for everything from trials to trail riding.Lg monitor dfc
Then the Spanish came along with some razzy two-strokes, and the Japanese, most notably Yamaha, were soon to follow. Four-strokes began to slip away. The Western world was wondering what the Eastern motorcycle manufacturers would do to fill the gap.
In Honda bore the four-stroke banner among the two-stroke-oriented Japanese. However, the revvy little engine felt much better on the street than on a forest road. That model lasted for five years, to be replaced by the XL single in Honda understood that they could sell a lot more bikes to the fun lovers than to the relatively few competitors, and these folk were more interested in slogging—rather than high-revving—power.
To that end thewith a chain-driven single overhead camshaft, got bored and stroked to cc, and a spin on the dyno showed the incher had well over 20 horsepower at the rear wheel, and almost 20 lb-ft of torque. And the miniscule XL at pounds appeared in for riders who really wanted light weight. Serious enduro types did not need such sissified things as electric starters, so the XL had an old-fashioned kicker.
But instead of tickling carburetors, retarding sparks, pulling in the compression release and getting the piston just past top dead center, as required by the British, all the Honda required was a big kick.
And to pull out the choke if the engine was cold. The five-speed gearbox had rather wide ratios, good for scrabbling in the muck, and a mere 5, rpm was required for cruising along at 55 mph on the pavement.
Top speed was said to be about 75 mph. Particulars for the XL were simple. One 32mm Keihin carb sent the fuel mixture into the combustion chamber, where it was compressed 8. One of the weak points of the bike was that when riding through rocky terrain, the header pipe was susceptible to getting squished by rocks, and a flattened pipe did not help engine operation at all. The XL had a pleasantly large saddle, though no passenger pegs.
The vibration from the solidly mounted engine was not a serious problem, but in consideration Honda designed the rider footpegs so that they were isolated by rubber absorbers. This machine was definitely for the semi-sporting enthusiast, though it was street-savvy, with turn signals and all.
However, in anticipation of the rambunctious rider Honda made it easy to pull off the turn signals, lights, and take out the small battery. The frame was similar to the cradle-type that housed thewith a single front downtube splitting into a pair of supports running under the engine. A reasonable bash-plate protected the vitals, with about eight inches of ground clearance when a not-too-heavy rider was aboard.Honda XL250 Restoration Part 10
The rear shock absorbers had preload adjustability, the fork none. Wheels used tough alloy Daido rims, with a 3. Brakes had small drums, fine in the dirt, a tad weak in traffic. In Honda did a major revamp of the XL, calling this one the K2, with chassis changes that increased the fork rake to 32 degrees, trail to 5. A new cylinder head allowed better intake breathing, and a very neat high-level exhaust system was tucked behind the frame and exited on the right side—taking care of that previously mentioned susceptibility problem on the low-level exhaust.Miniature australian shepherd puppies virginia
Appreciating the state of the market, passenger footpegs were fitted that were, of course, rubber-mounted.Honda XL is a four stroke cc motorcycle from Honda introduced in and manufactured through most of the 's.
It is an " enduro " or "dual purpose" bike meaning it physically looks like a dirt bike, and shares many characteristics with a dirt bike, but it is street legal. The bike is completely mechanically operated as there are no hydraulics on the bike.
The cc motor produces 24 horsepower and the bike weighs lbs with oil, grease, and gasoline.
