Hello, I am new to this forum and new to four strokes and am looking some much needed help. I recently acquired a Honda XLR that needs a new head and piston from a valve breaking. Here's a few pictures of the head and piston: Here's a few pictures of the cylinder: -What would cause the valve to break in the first place? But I can't find anything that says whether or not the piston and cylinder is the same? I went into the Honda dealer near me and they said they didn't keep part numbers for that old of a bike.

It might just be a carbon build up on the stems regardless it would be the perfect time to put new valve stem seals in it. Well I made a makeshift valve spring compressor and pulled the valves, and they're definitely bent.

Those marks on the piston most certainly came from contact with the valves. I'm thinking that perhaps a super-high rev and a very loose cam chain caused the cam gear to jump a tooth or two, allowing the piston to come up at an inopportune time in relation to the valves.

I realize the new head is from a different engine, but by all means, please replace your cam chain and tensioner to avoid reruns.
